360 West, March 2010 -- Don't let the straw hat and overalls fool you. This man is wise in the ways of the grape and makes a mean pinot noir.
When you meet Mac McDonald, you'll automatically do a double take. His wardrobe, for instance, consists of overalls and a straw hat, even when he is wining and dining with big-deal chef such as Charlie Trotter. "My father has this collection of hats, and he never left the house without one . . ." More...

Mac McDonald Had a Vision to Make Great Wine…And His Vision Became Reality
There is a boutique winery in Sonoma creag small production, high quality, incredibly juicy Pinot Noir. Vision Cellars was created in 1995, with 1997 being their first release, by Mac McDonald. Mac started with a desire to find great grapes and make great wine.
Vision Cellars a Success Story for African American
The film "Sideways" and its obsession with Pinot Noirs pale in comparison to the passion of Mac McDonald of Vision Cellars, in Windsor, Calif., who produces eight different Pinots. McDonald, 66, tasted his first one, a French Burgundy, quite by accident as a young boy and never forgot. It was a taste that shaped his life...
2007 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($38) 4 stars
A pinot with rich fruit flavors and exotic spice. Fruit flavors of currant and ripe blackberry, with a hint of plum. Great undercurrent of spice. Long finish.
Uncorked: Vision Cellars wines ripe with personality
Mac McDonald fills up a room. Though formidable in size, it is his warm expansive personality that draws you in. He liberally dispenses big bear hugs and calls all women honey and darling under the loving eye of his wife and business partner, Lil. I met Mac in 2004 when he came to Anniston for a wine dinner at The Victoria.
Tasting Highlights: California Pinot Noir
A baker's dozen of Sonoma Pinots from the 2006 and 2007 vintages
This is a transitional phase in the California Pinot Noir market. The last wave of 2006s is being released at the same time the big push for 2007 is starting. All of the wines in this report are from Sonoma, the state's largest Pinot appellation. And the prices are all $50 or less. We may wish for greater Pinot values, but that's not Pinot's strength.
I've really enjoyed many of the 2007s. They are ripe, fleshy, balanced and consistently very good to outstanding. Mac McDonald's Vision Cellars Coster Vineyard 2007 is one of his finest, and his Sonoma County bottling is also excellent. I'd also recommend Kutch (McDougal Ranch and Kanzler) as well as Failla (Sonoma Coast and Keefer Ranch).
The 2006 vintage was more variable, producing its share of greener, leaner, more herb-laced wines, but also many gems that came around slower and should benefit from cellaring. Small Vines is owned by Paul and Kathryn Sloan and its 2006 is outstanding. The Freeman 2006 Russian River Valley is tight and structured.

VISION CELLARS Pinot Noir Sonoma County 2007 Score: 90 | $38
An elegant style, complex and refined, with vibrant plum, black cherry, spice and a hint of mint that gains depth on the long finish. Drink now through 2013. 900 cases made. —J.L.

A Vintner's Vision
Spend 10 minutes visiting with Mac McDonald, and within the same breath he'll likely pontificate on his favorite wine grapes...
This is a big, voluptuous Pinot, solidly in the Gmys' style, but it possesses a delicate silkiness despite the size. In its extreme youth, the wine is all primmy fruit and oak, with flavors of chenies, black raspbenies, red licOlice, cola mld smoky vanilla. It feels broad and obvious, in the way of a young wine. However, 1-3 years in the bottle should bring out complexity. -S.H.
When California Riesling succeeds, it's because of wines like this, which hails trom a well-farmed, cool-climate region. The two most important varietal elements, racy acidity and subtle flavor, both are here. The latter suggest peaches, Meyer lemons and wildflowers, with a rich undertow of stony minerals, and the finish is wondelfully bone dry. What a great restaurant wine. Editors' Choice. -S.H.
Two of the crispest and most savory white varieties in California are Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris/Grigio, and this blend of both shows the best qualities of each. It's just slightly off¬dry and vibrant in citrus, fig, melon and vanilla flavors, with beautiful acidity. -S.H.
A delicate style, yet with plenty of substance, showing ripe, vivid wild berry and black cherry fruit, with a touch of cedar, netmed adn forest floor. Tight and complex, the tannins clamp down on the finish, letting just enough fruit throughto tempt you. ~ J.L.
